Aniflo® Technology: Offset Quality, Flexographic Simplicity and Digital Economics
In a label market where run lengths are constantly decreasing, printers face a major challenge: producing premium-quality labels while maintaining control over production costs and make-ready times.
Manufactured by SMAG-X, Aniflo® technology provides a unique answer to this challenge by combining the advantages of
Waterless Offset printing with an anilox-based inking system, delivering unprecedented process stability and ease of operation.

A Unique Printing Process
Aniflo® technology is based on a waterless offset printing architecture in which ink delivery is no longer achieved through a complex train of ink rollers, but instead through an anilox roll equipped with a chambered doctor blade system, similar to those used in flexographic printing.
The ink is transferred to an intermediate transfer cylinder, then to the offset plate before being printed onto the substrate. This design eliminates many of the variables traditionally associated with conventional offset printing.
Exceptional Stability
One of the key strengths of Aniflo® lies in its integrated thermal regulation system. The temperature of the various cylinders is automatically controlled to maintain consistent ink viscosity regardless of production speed.
This regulation ensures stable print density from the first meter to the last, significantly reducing color variations throughout the production run.
Thanks to this design:
- No ink/water balance is required.
- No ink key adjustments are necessary.
- Ghosting effects are eliminated.
- Variations caused by press inertia disappear.
- Dot gain remains extremely low.
Print Quality Comparable to Traditional Offset
Aniflo® technology retains all the advantages of the offset process:
- High screen ruling capability.
- Smooth and progressive gradients.
- Excellent detail reproduction.
- Standard resolution up to 200 lpi.
- Outstanding quality for premium labels, wines & spirits, cosmetics, and luxury products.
It also enables printing on a wide variety of substrates, ranging from synthetic films to textured papers commonly used in the wine industry.
A Highly Profitable Solution for Short and Medium Runs
While digital technologies offer outstanding flexibility, they often come with significant operating costs. Aniflo® delivers production costs comparable to conventional printing technologies.
The plates used are inexpensive (less than €3 per plate) and can be produced within minutes. In addition, the semi-rotary operation eliminates cylinder changes, reducing both setup times and material waste.
This combination dramatically lowers the profitability threshold for short-run jobs. While digital presses often become cost-effective at around 1,000 meters, Aniflo® can achieve a break-even point below 300 meters while maintaining true offset print quality.
A Process Perfectly Suited for Industry 4.0
The stability of the process enables precise ink characterization and seamless integration into modern prepress workflows such as Esko, Equinox, ERP and MIS systems.
Print results can be accurately predicted before production even begins, significantly reducing setup waste and improving overall efficiency.
When combined with Extended Gamut Printing (CMYK + Orange + Green + Blue), Aniflo® can reproduce a large number of Pantone® colors (up to 116 Pantone® references in this configuration) without intermediate wash-ups, dramatically increasing press productivity.
Conclusion
Aniflo® technology by SMAG-X represents a highly relevant alternative between traditional flexography and digital printing. It combines:
- The image quality of offset printing.
- The operational simplicity of flexography through an anilox-based inking system.
- Extremely competitive production costs.
- Outstanding color stability.
- Optimized profitability for short and medium print runs.
For label printers seeking a solution capable of producing premium-quality work while maintaining excellent cost control, Aniflo® stands out as one of the most innovative and efficient technologies available today.
